Sports
Given its overwhelming air and water pollution,
Shanghai isn't the best city for recreation. Your
primary options are the facilities at your hotel -- be
it gym, pool or tennis court. Otherwise, the city
offers some golf. Shanghai East Asia Golf Club is
actually just a driving range in central Shanghai. For
an actual course, the Shanghai International Golf
and Country Club has 18 holes to play, but only
guests at certain hotels can play there: Check with
yours. The elite Regency International Yacht Club
provides motorboats, sailboats, kayaks, jet skis and
other assorted water-sports gear on Dianshan Lake
(west of Shanghai).
Gym and sports facilities The Chinese concept of fitness concentrates predominantly on health, while the western ideas of fitness focus on building body strength. Basically, there are 2 types of Health Clubs/Gyms: hotel clubs that open their membership to the general public and standard alone pubs in the main downtown districts. Shop around and compare rates, joining fees, and facilities.
Health equipment is a hot commodity in Shanghai. Buy enough to fill a space and you have yourself a health club. It can be a godsend if you want to build your biceps but can cause you excruciating pain if used incorrectly. Unfortunately, in a new industry, hearsay travels faster than real advice and everyone thinks he is an expert. Don’t depend on it. Do your own research before putting on that fifty-pound weight. ?

Cultural Venues
If you come from a metropolitan city and are an aficionado of Western
opera, ballet and theater, you will find Shanghai a dull place. Occasionally,
foreign groups visit Shanghai, usually at the larger theaters, but you will
have to keep your eyes and ears open to be able to act quickly and get
tickets as they usually sell out quite quickly. It is possible to call the
various theaters and make reservations.
There are several theaters that give performances of modern and
traditional plays in Chinese (see the charts as below). Often there are
very interesting opportunities to see something out of the ordinary.
There are also a number of dance theaters and concert halls. Traditional
forms of stage performances are dwindling in popularity with most
attendants being more elderly people.
